Kia Vehicles Built in the USA
KMMG continues Kia Motors' aggressive investment in the U.S. market.2010 was a historic year for Kia Motors America (KMA). In addition to recording the company’s best-ever sales and 16th consecutive year of increased market share, KMA also launched its first U.S.-built vehicle, the 2011 Sorento CUV. The Sorento was the brand’s best-selling vehicle each month and became the first Kia nameplate to eclipse 100,000 units in the U.S. in one year.
The success of the high-quality Sorento built in West Point, Georgia led to Kia Motors’ decision in April 2011 to expand production at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) to include the critically acclaimed Optima midsize sedan, which has received a number of industry awards and accolades since its debut in late 2010.
Production of the 2012 Optima officially began September 2, 2011 following a $100 million expansion effort in the plant’s four main shops – stamping, welding, paint and general assembly – to prepare for the additional production and raise annual capacity to 360,000 vehicles in 2012. In addition to the physical expansion, KMMG also completed the hiring pricess for nearly 1,000 new team members and began operating a third shift, bringing the total number of jobs created at the plant to more than 3,000, with on-site and nearby suppliers creating an additional 7,500 jobs in the region.
Kia’s first U.S.-assembled vehicle, a white 2011 MY Sorento CUV, rolled off the production line November 16, 2009 at KMMG, officially starting production at the plant. Representing a $1 billion investment by Kia Motors, KMMG has established new benchmarks for vehicle quality and productivity by utilizing some of the world’s most advanced manufacturing techniques. KMMG’s general assembly area is outfitted with more than a half mile of height-adjustable conveyors to achieve the most favorable installation position for each member and reduce fatigue.
Built on 2,200 acres, the complex includes a body stamping facility, a transmission shop where the 2011 Sorento’s six-speed automatic transmission is produced, and a two mile test track in addition to the main assembly plant.
KMMG continues Kia Motors’ aggressive investment in the U.S. market. Since 2002, more than $1.4 billion has been invested in various facilities throughout the country, including a dedicated corporate campus and design studio in Irvine, California.
